Bye... sort of

2 min read
I'm getting annoyed with DeviantArt. The community is great, as ever, but I feel like the site itself has been going down hill the last couple years. That's why I've haven't been adding new photos very often.

All the ads, even f**king pop-ups and blinking/animated ads. I never thought DA would stoop so low! Slow load times (because of the ads, no doubt), constantly CONSTANTLY being pestered to pay for an account, the slow upload process, and not being able to search even my own photos easily. Meh. I don't need this. Not for a hobby.

I'm not leaving or anything, but my upload pace is not going to improve. I just want to let y'all know. I'm still taking stock photos all the time, but I won't be putting very many of them up here at DA.

Flickr.com on the other hand... is my new BFF. You want *all* my latest stock photos, you should visit my Flickr account. No ads, easy upload for multiple images, easy batch organize, tags and searchs. Frankly, it's just set up for stock photos much better than DevArt. And the pages load faster.

Sorry, DA. I hope we can still be friends.

Thanks for all the comments and support, everyone!

-Suzanne

---Terms of Use---
Hello there! I like sharing, don't you?

All the photos on this account, submitted under the 'resource' category, are for anyone to use, for any project, commercial or otherwise, inside or outside of deviantArt. Most are under a Creative Commons license; all I ask is that you credit me, Suzanne Phillips, if you display them. (Unless it's just as reference for a drawing, in which case no credit is needed).

A link to the finished product would be really cool. If you're not a member of deviantArt, my email is located below this journal.

I have this account because I take photos all the time for my own use: stock, art, and  snapshots. I decided to share the ones I thought might be useful.

You have to click "Download Image" to see the high resolution image.

Thanks, and enjoy!

Whew. I just tried contributing some of my stock photos to the Wikipedia Creative Commons. What a bother. I found the process clunky, unintuitive, needlessly obtuse and lacking in anything approaching a clear explanation.

It really made me appreciate dA's submission process. Hell, it even made Elfwood's submission process look smooth as a powdered baby's ass.

My main problem is with the 'tags' or keywords (they don't call them that, they're "categories"). They have some very specific rules/guidelines for placing each file within categories so they can be searched... but wikipedia is always in flux, so there's no way to tell what categories you should place a file in - and there's no guidance at all, except what not to do.

At Wikipedia, they seem really good at explaining things you shouldn't or can't do, or things that will get your file deleted, but no one seems to have bothered to explain clearly what you SHOULD be doing.

It's also difficult to edit anything once you've submitted a file. Also, once you've submitted a file, it's a "non-revocable gift". I've never considered withdrawing ANY images from my stock account here on deviantArt (except for quality reasons), but to be forced to not have the option really makes me grit my teeth.

I may try again once my frustration has faded, but I have better things to spend my time on.

Is it just me? Anyone else tried the Commons before? I never considered myself particularly dense, am I just missing something here?

I'm a busy little bee. I graduated. I got a new job. I got a new apartment. I totaled my car. I bought a new car. All in the span of about three months. I'm still taking photos, it's like a nervous tick with me; I can't help it. But keeping up with things at DA is hard, even though I enjoy it very much. Thank you to everyone who's stopped by and commented/faved/arted. I appreciate all of it. :D

Ok, for those of you have me on your Watch List, the great influx of submissions has subsided - you now have access to almost all the stock on my harddrive that I took myself. I will continue to submit stock as I take new ones, but this business of submitting 20 photos a day has ended. Promise.

So, how 'bout some organizational, catagorical links with explantations?
